Southern hemisphere dune research

Research into aspects of the ecology, geomorphology, archaeology and management of southern hemisphere dune systems

Jan 2010 student checking windspeeds at Mason Bay South Island New Zealand

Dune research at the University of Otago involves staff from a range of departments:

  • Anthropology
  • Applied Science
  • Botany
  • Environmental Planning
  • Geography
  • Surveying
  • Zoology

Most of our current projects involve collaborations within the University and external links with iwi, local government, crown research institutes or Government departments.

Many of the projects are relevant to the conservation and management of threatened species or ecosystems, or the management of sandy coasts.

We welcome the involvement of anyone with an interest in coastal dunes. We seek to encourage the involvement of colleagues from other institutions and other countries, including postgraduate students.
